Langtang Gosaikunda Trek
Trip Overview
The Langtang Gosaikunda Trek spans 13 days and covers roughly 95 to 105 km across two distinct landscapes in the Langtang region of Nepal. The first half takes you into the glacier-fed Langtang valley beneath Langtang Lirung, through Tamang villages and a forest trail up to Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870m. The second half turns west toward the Gosaikunda lake basin, climbing through rhododendron forest to the sacred lakes at 4,380m before crossing Surya Kunda Pass at 4,610m, the highest point on the route, and descending into Nuwakot district through Talu rather than backtracking the way most Gosaikunda itineraries do.
This is a moderate trek built around two distinct altitude gains rather than one long steady climb. A built-in acclimatisation day at Kyanjin Gompa sits between them, giving your body a real adjustment window before the second push toward Gosaikunda and the pass crossing. Trekking days run 5 to 7 hours on a mix of forest trail, stone steps, and loose alpine terrain, with accommodation in twin-share teahouses and lodges throughout, aside from your Kathmandu hotel nights.
What sets this route apart from a standard Langtang or Gosaikunda itinerary is the combination: a forested river valley, a working monastery village with an active yak cheese factory, and a high-altitude lake basin held sacred in both Hindu and Buddhist tradition, all inside one loop, exiting through a district far fewer trekkers pass through.
Who This Trek Is For and Who Should Skip It
Suits you if:
- You've completed at least one multi-day trek above 3,500m before, in Nepal or elsewhere
- You want two distinct trail environments (forested valley and alpine lakes) on one Langtang Gosaikunda Trek itinerary
- You're comfortable with 5 to 7 hour trekking days on uneven terrain
- You want a less-crowded exit route through Nuwakot district rather than backtracking to Syabrubesi
- You can handle four nights above 3,800m without previous AMS issues
Skip this if:
- This would be your first trek above 3,000m in Nepal. Consider the Short Gosaikunda Trek or the Langtang Valley Trek (10-day) instead
- You have limited time. The Short Mardi Himal Trek (5-day) or Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek (7-day) cover Himalayan scenery in Nepal in fewer days
- You have a diagnosed heart or lung condition without medical clearance for altitude. Consider a lower-altitude sightseeing option instead, such as a Kathmandu Valley cultural tour (Bhaktapur, Patan, Swayambhunath) or a Chitwan National Park safari, both of which stay well below altitude-risk elevations.
- You want a technical mountaineering route. The Langtang Gosaikunda Trek involves no technical climbing or fixed ropes. If you're after roped climbing, look at Island Peak or Mera Peak instead.
Trek Highlights
- Langtang Lirung (7,227m) views from the trail above Lama Hotel and directly from Kyanjin Gompa
- Kyanjin Gompa monastery and the Kyanjin Ri viewpoint (4,773m) side trip, weather dependent
- Yak cheese factory at Kyanjin Gompa, operating since the 1950s with Swiss dairy assistance
- Langtang village, rebuilt after the 2015 earthquake and avalanche, with a memorial chorten on the original village site
- Gosaikunda (4,380m), a glacial lake held sacred in both Hindu and Buddhist tradition, part of a cluster of high-altitude lakes
- Crossing Surya Kunda Pass (4,610m), the highest point on the route and a genuine high-pass crossing with 360-degree views on a clear morning
- Descent into Nuwakot district via Talu, a route far fewer trekkers use compared to the standard Gosaikunda-to-Dhunche exit
- Tamang villages along the Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel section, with local guesthouses run by the same families for multiple trekking generations
- Rhododendron forest sections between Thulo Syabru and Lauribina, in bloom March to April
- Two distinct high-altitude environments (glacial valley and alpine lake basin) inside a single 13-day Langtang Gosaikunda Trek loop
- One of the few treks in Nepal that combines a forested river valley, a monastery village, and a sacred alpine lake basin on a single route
Route Overview
The Langtang Gosaikunda Trek route starts with a private vehicle transfer to your Kathmandu hotel, then a 7-8 hour jeep drive to Syabrubesi (1,550m) on day 2. From there, the trail follows the Langtang Khola through forest to Lama Hotel (2,500m), then climbs through Langtang village (3,430m) to Kyanjin Gompa (3,870m), with a full acclimatisation and exploration day at Kyanjin Gompa. The trail then descends back through Lama Hotel to Thulo Syabru (2,210m), where it turns away from the Langtang Valley and climbs toward Lauribina (3,910m) and Gosaikunda (4,380m). From Gosaikunda, the route crosses Surya Kunda Pass (4,610m) and descends to Talu (2,900m) in Nuwakot district, Nepal, then continues to Ghyangphedi (2,050m) for the drive back to Kathmandu.

How much does the Langtang Gosaikunda Trek Cost in 2026/2027?
The Langtang Gosaikunda Trek in Nepal costs USD 940 to USD 1,380 per person, depending on group size, season, and add-ons. Several factors move the price within that range:
- Group size: A private trek for one or two people costs more per person than joining a group of four or more, since fixed costs (guide, permits, jeep charter) are shared across fewer trekkers.
- Porter hire: Adds USD 20 per day for one porter, covering up to two trekkers.
- Room type: Only affects the cost in Kathmandu and Thulo Syabru, where private hotel rooms cost more than twin-share. Tea houses above Thulo Syabru are twin-share by default, and private rooms aren't always available at altitude regardless of budget.
- Season: Peak dates (March to May, October to November) book out lodges early, and last-minute bookings in these windows sometimes cost more due to limited room availability. Monsoon departures typically cost less, since lodges have more room to negotiate with fewer trekkers on the trail.
- Booking timing: Book 6 or more months out for up to 15% off, or 3 to 6 months out for up to 10% off, through Madcap Adventure's early bird structure. Groups of four or more receive an additional discount on top of any early bird rate.
- 2027 pre-booking: Booking a 2027 departure before December 31, 2026 locks in 2026 pricing with a 20% deposit.
Make the Most of Your Trip: Langtang Gosaikunda Extensions
The Langtang region has more than one route through it, and several Nepal treks link up with the Langtang Gosaikunda Trek at a shared trailhead or a shared section of trail. These are the most popular add-ons trekkers combine with this route, along with what each one actually requires in terms of extra days and itinerary changes.
- Helambu Extension via Gosaikunda (4-5 additional days). Rather than exiting over Surya Kunda Pass to Talu, some trekkers continue from Gosaikunda through Ghopte and Melamchi Gaon into the Helambu region, visiting Tarkeghyang and Sermathang before descending to Melamchi Pul Bazar for the drive back to Kathmandu. This is a genuine route change on Day 11 onward, not a bolt-on, since it replaces the Surya Kunda Pass and Talu section entirely. It adds Hyolmo and Sherpa village culture that the Nuwakot exit route doesn't include.
- Tamang Heritage Trail (add 3-4 days, usually before Day 3). This trail runs through Gatlang, Tatopani (natural hot springs), and the Nagthali Danda viewpoint on the western side of the valley, before rejoining the main Langtang trail near Lama Hotel or Syabrubesi. Most trekkers add it at the start of the trip rather than the end, since it approaches from a different trailhead direction out of Syabrubesi. Briddim village, known for its Tamang homestays, sits on this route.
- Ganja La Pass (add 4 to 5 days, experienced trekkers only). A high, technical pass at roughly 5,130m connecting the Langtang valley directly to the Helambu region, usually joined after Kyanjin Gompa instead of retracing the route back through Lama Hotel. This crossing involves glacier travel and requires camping equipment, a specialised guide, and prior high-altitude mountaineering experience.
- Panch Pokhari (add 5-6 days, joined from the Helambu side). A cluster of five sacred alpine lakes east of Helambu, less visited than Gosaikunda and reached via a separate trailhead near Chautara. This works better as a standalone extension after a Helambu exit than as a direct add-on to the standard Langtang Gosaikunda itinerary, since it requires additional road transport to reach the trailhead.
Route changes involving Helambu or Ganja La Pass affect your permits, guide arrangement, and total itinerary length, so these need to be planned into your booking rather than decided on trail. Let us know which extension interests you when you send your booking inquiry, and we'll rebuild the itinerary and quote around it.
Last-Minute Booking for Langtang Gosaikunda Trek
Madcap Adventure accepts last-minute bookings with at least 24 hours notice before departure, though last-minute bookings require full payment upfront rather than the standard 20% deposit. This covers the compressed timeline for confirming guide availability, teahouse rooms, and permit processing on short notice. Send your preferred trek, dates, and group size as early as possible, since peak season dates in March to May and October to November have the least flexibility for same-week departures.
Langtang Gosaikunda Trek Itinerary
Arrival in Kathmandu
A representative from Madcap Adventure meets you at Tribhuvan International Airport of Nepal and transfers you to your Kathmandu hotel by private vehicle. The rest of the day is free for gear checks, a trek briefing, and last-minute purchases in Thamel. If you arrive with time to spare, use it. Thamel's trekking shops stock replacement gear at reasonable prices, and it's worth checking your down jacket and sleeping bag rating against Kyanjin Gompa and Gosaikunda night temperatures before you leave the city.
Kathmandu to Syabrubesi
The drive out of Kathmandu follows the Pasang Lhamu Highway, rough and winding for the final stretch into Syabrubesi. Expect dust in the dry season and slower going after rain. This is the longest vehicle day of the trip. Syabrubesi sits at the trailhead and has the last real selection of shops and guesthouses before the trail proper begins on your Langtang Gosaikunda Trek.
Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel
The trail follows the Langtang Khola through subtropical forest, crossing several suspension bridges. Watch for red pandas in the rhododendron and bamboo sections above the river, though sightings are rare and mostly reported at dawn. Lama Hotel is a small tea house cluster, not an actual hotel, and the name confuses first-time trekkers on this route every season.
Lama Hotel to Langtang Village
The trail gains altitude steadily today, and you'll notice the change in vegetation from forest to open alpine pasture. Langtang village was destroyed in the 2015 earthquake-triggered avalanche and has been rebuilt slightly uphill from the original site. A memorial chorten marks the location of the old village.
Mountain views: Langtang Lirung (7,227m) becomes visible above the treeline as the forest thins past Ghoda Tabela.
Langtang Village to Kyanjin Gompa
A shorter, gentler day than the previous one, giving your body time to adjust before the acclimatisation day. The Kyanjin Gompa monastery and the yak cheese factory, running since the 1950s, are both worth visiting once you arrive.
Mountain views: Langtang Lirung, Kimshung, and Yala Peak line the valley for most of the walk.
Explore Day at Kyanjin Gompa
This is your scheduled acclimatisation day, built in specifically for altitude adjustment before the Gosaikunda section later in the trek. Most trekkers hike up to Kyanjin Ri or Tserko Ri. Start before 6 am if you want the viewpoint before the cloud builds in, which it often does by mid-morning.
Mountain views: Kyanjin Ri offers a full panorama of Langtang Lirung and the surrounding glaciated peaks on a clear morning.
Note: Max altitude: 4,773 m (optional Kyanjin Ri side trip). Overnight remains at 3,870m.
Kyanjin Gompa to Lama Hotel
A long descent back down the valley. Knees take the strain today rather than lungs. The lower oxygen stress makes this a comparatively easy day physically, even with the distance covered.
Lama Hotel to Thulo Syabru Village
The trail leaves the Langtang Khola and climbs toward Thulo Syabru, a larger Tamang village with more permanent hotel-style accommodation than the tea houses further up the valley. This marks the transition point from the Langtang valley section into the Gosaikunda section of the Langtang Gosaikunda Trek.
Thulo Syabru to Lauribina
A steep, steady climb through rhododendron forest that thins into alpine scrub as you approach Lauribina. This is a second significant altitude gain on the trek, and it's worth pacing deliberately rather than pushing hard early in the day.
Mountain views: Ganesh Himal and the Langtang range appear intermittently through the rhododendron canopy as the trail gains height.
Lauribina to Gosaikunda
A shorter distance but higher altitude gain than the daily average, and this is where AMS risk is highest on the route. Gosaikunda itself is a glacial lake considered sacred in both Hindu and Buddhist tradition, and it draws pilgrims as well as trekkers during the Janai Purnima festival in August.
Mountain views: The Gosaikunda lake basin sits beneath a ring of rock peaks, with distant views back toward the Langtang range on a clear day.
Gosaikunda to Talu via Surya Kunda Pass
The longest and most demanding day of the trek. The climb to Surya Kunda Pass is gradual, but the descent into Nuwakot district is steep and can be loose underfoot. Start early. The pass is exposed, and afternoon clouds or wind are common. This exit route through Talu sees far fewer trekkers than the standard descent back to Dhunche, and lodge options are more basic.
Mountain views: The pass gives a wide panorama back over the Gosaikunda lakes and forward into the Nuwakot hills, before the trail drops out of high alpine terrain entirely.
Max altitude: 4,610m (Surya Kunda Pass), descending to Talu at 2,900m
Talu to Ghyangphedi to Kathmandu
A shorter final trekking day down to Ghyangphedi, followed by a shared vehicle transfer back to Kathmandu. Road conditions on this Nuwakot-side route vary by season and recent rainfall. A farewell dinner closes out this Nepal trek.
Max altitude: 2,900m (descending to 2,050m at Ghyangphedi)
Your Final Departure
Madcap Adventure representatives will drop you off at Tribhuvan International Airport in a private vehicle for your onward flight.
Itinerary Flexibility
This itinerary can be adjusted before departure: switch the Surya Kunda Pass exit for the Helambu route, or add the Tamang Heritage Trail at the start. Tell Madcap Adventure your dates, fitness level, and preferences when you book.
Guide Decisions on Trail
Surya Kunda Pass (4,610m) and the Gosaikunda basin can be affected by snow, wind, or ice. Above 3,800m, altitude sickness is something your guide checks for daily. In these situations, your licensed guide can delay the pass crossing, add a rest day, or adjust the route if needed. This is standard trail judgment, not a formality.

Essential Information
Difficulty and Fitness
The Langtang Gosaikunda Trek is moderate. Most days run 5 to 7 hours on foot, over a mix of forest trail, stone steps, and loose alpine terrain, with two separate altitude gains above 3,800m and a high pass crossing at 4,610m. Day 11 in particular combines a pass crossing with a long, steep descent, and is physically demanding regardless of prior altitude experience. Prior trekking experience above 3,000m is recommended. If this would be your first high-altitude trek, the Short Gosaikunda Trek (3-day) or the Langtang Valley Trek (10-day) are better starting points.
Langtang Gosaikunda Trek Permits and Costs 2026/2027
| PERMITS | FOREIGN NATIONALS | SAARC NATIONALS |
| Langtang National Park Entry Permit | NPR 3000 (Approx. USD 27) | NPR 1500 (Approx. USD 12) |
| TIMS Card | NPR 1000-2000 (Approx. USD 7-14) | Same |
Guide requirement: a licensed guide has been mandatory for Langtang National Park since February 17, 2025, and is checked at park entry checkpoints.
Safety and Altitude
Two separate stretches of the Langtang Gosaikunda Trek sit above 3,800m: Kyanjin Gompa and the acclimatisation day, and the Gosaikunda to Surya Kunda Pass section. Altitude Mountain Sickness risk is real on both, and the built-in acclimatisation day at Kyanjin Gompa exists specifically to reduce that risk before the second high section later in the trek. Your guide monitors for AMS symptoms daily and carries a first aid kit. Travel and rescue insurance covering helicopter evacuation above 4,000m is required for all Madcap Adventure trekkers. For a full breakdown of AMS symptoms and prevention, see our altitude sickness guide.
When is the best time for trekking in Langtang Gosaikunda?
Spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November) are the best seasons for the Langtang Gosaikunda Trek, with rhododendron blooms and stable weather in spring and the clearest mountain visibility of the year in autumn. Monsoon (June to August) costs less thanks to lighter trail traffic, but brings leeches and obscured views. Winter (December to February) suits experienced trekkers only, since Surya Kunda Pass can hold snow and ice and demands extra gear.
Accommodation and Food
Accommodation on the Langtang Gosaikunda Trek is twin-share tea houses and lodges throughout, with private hotel rooms available in Kathmandu and Thulo Syabru. Rooms above Lama Hotel are basic: plywood walls, shared bathrooms, and no heating outside the communal dining room. Dal bhat is the most reliable option at every elevation: rice, lentil soup, and vegetable curry, with unlimited refills at most tea houses. Menu variety narrows above Kyanjin Gompa and Gosaikunda, where supplies are carried in by porter or mule.
Solo Trekking, Female Trekkers Safety and Female Guide Options
Solo trekking on the Langtang Gosaikunda Trek is possible with a licensed guide, which Madcap Adventure requires on all Langtang region departures in Nepal regardless of group size. There is no minimum group size requirement for this specific route.
Solo and female trekkers complete this route regularly, accompanied throughout by a licensed guide, including on the exposed Surya Kunda Pass crossing where trekking without a guide would carry more risk regardless of group size. Villages along the trail are used to hosting trekkers travelling alone. Madcap Adventure offers a female guide on request for trekkers who prefer one.
How to Prepare for the Langtang Gosaikunda Trek
- Fitness. Start cardiovascular training at least 6 to 8 weeks before departure, with hill walking or stair training if possible. Daily trekking days run 5 to 7 hours on uneven terrain, so leg strength and endurance matter more than raw speed.
- Medical checkup. Get checked out if you have any heart, lung, or blood pressure conditions, and carry any prescribed medication in your daypack rather than checked luggage. Mention the 4,610m pass crossing to your doctor specifically.
- Travel insurance. Confirm your policy covers helicopter evacuation above 4,500m before you travel. This is mandatory for the Langtang Gosaikunda Trek, and standard travel insurance often excludes high-altitude trekking unless you add it.
- Cash. Bring more Nepali cash than you think you need. The last reliable ATM on this route is in Syabrubesi. There are no cash machines beyond the trailhead.
- Gear. Pack a sleeping bag rated to at least -15°C for Gosaikunda nights, along with layered warm clothing, waterproofs, and trekking poles for the Surya Kunda Pass descent.
- Connectivity. Expect no phone signal or wifi for most of the Surya Kunda Pass to Talu section. Tell family or work contacts in advance that you'll be offline for at least a day.
- Vaccinations. Check with a travel clinic on typhoid, hepatitis A, and tetanus coverage well before departure.
Cancellation and Refund Policy of Madcap Adventure
- Full refund: cancel 60 or more days before departure
- Partial refund (50%): cancel 30 to 59 days before departure
