The 13-day Gokyo Lake Trek takes you through the quieter western corridor of the Khumbu to six glacial lakes and the summit of Gokyo Ri (5,360m), where Everest (8,848.86m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,485m), and Cho Oyu (8,188m) are visible from a single ridgeline. The route branches away from the main Everest Base Camp trail at Phortse Thanga and follows the Dudh Koshi valley north past the Ngozumpa Glacier, the longest glacier in Nepal, to Gokyo village at 4,790m. This Gokyo Lake Trek package includes a Nepal Government-licensed trekking guide, the required trekking permits, and a carefully planned acclimatization schedule. Package prices start from USD 1,255 per person, covering all meals, accommodation, Kathmandu to Lukla flights, permits, and guide from Kathmandu and back.
Gokyo Lake Trek
Trip Overview
The Gokyo Lake Trek sits in a different category from the standard Everest Base Camp route. Where the EBC trail funnels thousands of trekkers north through Tengboche and Dingboche toward Gorak Shep, the Gokyo route branches west at Phortse Thanga into a valley that carries a fraction of that traffic. From Phortse Thanga onward, the trail is noticeably quieter, the tea houses are less crowded, and the upper valley above Machhermo has a remoteness that the main EBC corridor rarely delivers in peak season.
The six Gokyo Lakes are the defining feature of this route and have no equivalent anywhere on the EBC trail. Designated as a Ramsar wetland site, they form the world's highest freshwater lake system. The third lake (also known as Dudh Pokhari) at Gokyo village (4,790m) is the most visited, with water colour shifting from pale green to deep turquoise depending on light and season. The Ngozumpa Glacier, Nepal's longest, runs the entire western length of the valley and only reveals its full scale from the summit of Gokyo Ri above the village.
At 13 days, the Gokyo Lake Trek is one of the most complete short itineraries in the Khumbu. The acclimatisation day at Namche Bazaar and the steady altitude gain through Machhermo and Gokyo village are built into the structure deliberately. Gokyo Ri at 5,360m is the high point, reached on a pre-dawn summit push with four eight-thousanders visible from the top on a clear morning. The route is not technical, but it reaches a serious altitude and the summit day demands genuine aerobic fitness. This is not a trek to attempt if undertrained or without a comprehensive travel insurance policy covering helicopter evacuation up to at least 6,000m.
Trekkers who want something less crowded than Everest Base Camp will find this route a better fit. Everything in this 13-day Gokyo Lake Trek package is included: tea house accommodation, all meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), a government-licensed guide, domestic flights, and all required permits. You arrive in Kathmandu; Madcap Adventure handles the rest.
Highlights of the Gokyo Lake Trek
- Gokyo Ri summit (5,360m): A genuine summit day with a 360° panorama of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu from a single ridgeline. Four of the world's six highest peaks in one view.
- The Gokyo Lakes chain: Six glacial lakes between 4,700m and 5,000m, the highest freshwater lake system in the world. The third lake at Gokyo village sits at 4,790m and reflects the surrounding peaks on clear mornings.
- Namche Bazaar (3,440m): The Khumbu's main hub, with a Saturday market, bakeries, gear shops, ATMs, and a full acclimatisation day before the altitude gets serious.
- Everest View Hotel hike from Namche: The acclimatisation day hike above Namche reaches approximately 3,880m with your first clear view of Everest, Ama Dablam, and Thamserku from the ridge.
- The Ngozumpa Glacier: The longest glacier in Nepal, visible from the trail above Gokyo. The scale takes a moment to register.
- Khumjung village (approx. 3,790m): A Sherpa village on the descent with the Hillary School, a small monastery, and almost no other trekkers. Worth taking time here.
- Phortse Thanga and Machhermo: Two quieter staging villages on the approach. The trails here are noticeably less busy than the EBC corridor, and the views of the Gokyo valley opening ahead are worth slowing down for.
- Sagarmatha National Park: Most of the route, from Monjo onward, runs through one of Nepal's most biodiverse protected areas, home to snow leopards, musk deer, Himalayan tahr, and dozens of high-altitude bird species.
Gokyo Lake Trek Route
The route begins with a domestic flight from Kathmandu, or Manthali/Ramechhap during peak season, to Lukla at 2,840m. From Lukla, the trail drops briefly to Phakding at 2,610m before climbing to Namche Bazaar at 3,440m, the main hub of the Khumbu and the last place with a reliable ATM on the route. After a full acclimatisation day at Namche, the trail branches west away from the EBC crowds through Phortse Thanga at 3,680m and Machhermo at 4,470m before reaching Gokyo village at 4,790m, where the famous lakes chain begins.
Day 8 is the summit push to Gokyo Ri at 5,360m, a 570m climb above camp on steep switchbacks with Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu visible from the top. The descent runs through Dole at 4,200m, back through Namche via Khumjung village, and down to Lukla for the return flight to Kathmandu.
Gokyo Lake Trek Elevation Profile
The trek flies into Lukla at 2,840m and descends slightly to Phakding at 2,610m on Day 2 before beginning the steady climb to Namche at 3,440m. The acclimatisation hike above Namche on Day 4 reaches approximately 3,880m, applying the climb-high-sleep-low principle before the trail pushes deeper into the Khumbu. Altitude climbs steadily through Phortse Thanga (3,680m), Dole (4,200m), Machhermo (4,470m), and Gokyo (4,790m) before the sharpest gain on Day 8: the 570m summit push to Gokyo Ri at 5,360m. The descent from Gokyo drops through Dole (4,200m), Namche (3,440m), and back to Lukla (2,840m).
Trekking high point: Gokyo Ri, 5,360m | Lowest point on the Lukla-to-Lukla trekking route: Phakding, 2,610m | Total distance: approximately 106 km / 66 miles from Lukla to Lukla
Gokyo Ri Summit: The High Point of the Gokyo Lake Trek
At 5,360m, Gokyo Ri is the highest point of this trek and the view that defines the entire route. An early start from Gokyo village takes you up 570m of steep switchbacks on open rocky ground to a summit ridge with an unobstructed 360° panorama. Everest (8,848.86m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,485m), and Cho Oyu (8,188m), four of the world's six highest peaks, appear from a single viewpoint. The Ngozumpa Glacier, the longest glacier in Nepal, spreads 1,500m below you down the western valley wall. Clouds build from the south by late morning on most days, so summit by 9:00 am if conditions allow. The descent is steep and hard on the knees. Trekking poles are essential.
Is this 13-Day Gokyo Lake Trek in Nepal Right for You?
This trek suits you if:
- You have completed at least one multi-day trek above 3,500m and felt comfortable at that altitude
- You want a quieter alternative to the Everest Base Camp trail with significantly fewer trekkers from Phortse Thanga onward
- You want to stand on a genuine high-altitude summit with four eight-thousanders visible from a single ridgeline
- You can walk five to seven hours daily on steep, uneven terrain for multiple consecutive days
- You want to see the Gokyo Lakes, the Ngozumpa Glacier, and the upper Khumbu without retracing the standard EBC corridor
- You are comfortable with basic tea house accommodation and shared bathrooms above 4,000m
- You want the option to extend to Everest Base Camp, the Three Passes, or Island Peak climbing on the same trip
Skip this trek if:
- This is your first multi-day trek in Nepal. Consider the Langtang Valley Trek (7 to 10 days, maximum 3,870m) or the Annapurna Base Camp Trek (10 to 12 days, maximum 4,130m) instead, both of which offer better infrastructure and a gentler altitude profile for first-time trekkers
- You cannot walk five to six hours daily without significant fatigue or joint pain. The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek (4 to 5 days, maximum 3,210m) is more manageable and still delivers strong Himalayan views
- You have fewer than 13 days available. The standard Everest Base Camp Trek can be completed in 12 days without the Gokyo Lakes section
- Trekkers of any age with an unmanaged cardiac or respiratory condition, recent surgery, or without medical clearance for altitudes above 5,000m should consult a doctor before booking and consider the Kathmandu Valley sightseeing tour or Pokhara cultural stay as an alternative.
Why Trek the Gokyo Lake Trek with Madcap Adventure?
Madcap Adventure has been running Himalayan treks since 2004. Our guide team comes from Sherpa and hill communities across the Solu Khumbu region and has completed the Gokyo Lake route across every season. That trail knowledge shows in practical ways: knowing which tea houses have reliable water above 4,000m, which sections of the Gokyo Ri approach get exposed to wind before the summit, and when conditions say the day needs to change.
- Government-licensed guides: Every guide holds a Nepal Tourism Board certification and carries altitude and first aid training. This is verified at the Sagarmatha National Park entry gate at Monjo on every departure.
- Full acclimatisation day in Namche: This itinerary includes a complete rest and hike day at Namche Bazaar before the trail pushes above 4,000m. Operators who cut this day to shorten the itinerary transfer the risk to you.
- Altitude monitoring above 3,500m: Your guide carries a pulse oximeter and checks oxygen saturation daily from Namche onward. Emergency oxygen is carried on the trail above 4,000m.
- Local guides and porters: All guides and porters are hired from Sherpa and Khumbu communities. The money stays in the region you are trekking through.
- Gokyo Lakes environmental commitment: The lakes are a Ramsar-designated wetland site. Madcap Adventure uses reusable water systems on the trail, works with tea houses that manage waste responsibly, and does not use single-use plastic on any departure.
- Transparent pricing: Everything covered in this package is listed in the inclusions above. Everything not covered is listed in the exclusions. The quote you receive is the price you pay after deposit.
- 24/7 Kathmandu office support: If your Lukla flight is delayed, if weather closes the trail, or if a health situation develops above Machhermo, our Kathmandu office is staffed and reachable around the clock with a direct response.
- Registered with Nepal Tourism Board and TAAN: All documentation, permits, and guide certifications are current and verified before every departure.
How Much Does the Gokyo Lake Trek Cost in 2026/2027?
The 13-day Gokyo Lake Trek with Madcap Adventure starts from USD 1,255 and goes up to USD 1,670 per person. That price is not a deposit or a base rate with extras bolted on later. It covers your licensed guide for the full 13 days, all tea house accommodation on trail, full-board meals from Day 2 through to your last trekking day, Kathmandu to Lukla flights in both directions, and all permit fees for Sagarmatha National Park and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality. What moves your quote within that range is covered below.
- Group vs private: Joining a scheduled group departure splits fixed costs across trekkers and brings the per-person price down. A private package places those same costs entirely with your group.
- Porter add-on: A porter carries your main bag up to 25kg at an additional daily rate. On the Gokyo Ri summit morning at 5,360m, a light daypack is not a luxury.
- Flight option: The standard package includes fixed-wing flights to and from Lukla. A helicopter at USD 550 per person on a five-person sharing basis avoids the 1 am to 3 am Manthali road transfer during peak season.
- Room type: Twin-share with shared bathrooms is standard above 3,500m. Private bathroom rooms are available in lower-section lodges and fill early during peak season.
- Booking timing: Book six or more months in advance for up to 15% off. Book three to six months ahead for up to 10% off. For 2027 departures, lock in 2026 pricing by booking before December 31, 2026.
- Season: Peak season departures in October, November, March, and April carry higher demand on tea house availability. Off-season departures offer more flexibility on dates but require realistic expectations above 4,000m.
- Meals included vs. not: Our standard package covers all meals on the trek: breakfast, lunch, and dinner at tea houses throughout the route. Some operators list lower base prices but leave meals out entirely. Above 4,000m in Sagarmatha National Park, your options for finding food outside your tea house are limited to whatever that lodge is cooking that night.
Is the Gokyo Lake Trek Safe for Solo and Female Trekkers?
Yes, the Gokyo Lake Trek is safe for both solo and female trekkers. Nepal's mandatory guide rule, fully enforced in 2023, means every foreign trekker travels with a licensed professional regardless of group size, and the two-person minimum has been removed so you can book as a solo trekker without joining a group. The Khumbu region has well-established tea house infrastructure, regular trekker traffic on the main trail, and checkpoint systems at Monjo and Namche Bazaar throughout the route. Sherpa communities along the corridor are accustomed to solo female trekkers, harassment on the trail is rare, and private rooms with lockable doors are standard from Namche Bazaar upward. The highest risk on this route for any trekker is altitude, not personal safety.
Female guides are available on request at Madcap Adventure and hold the same Nepal Tourism Board licence and route qualifications as male guides. Request one at the time of booking rather than closer to your departure date, as availability is limited during the peak October and November season. Solo trekkers pay a single supplement on the package price as guide and logistics costs do not divide across a second person. Contact Madcap Adventure for the current solo rate. Trekking without a licensed guide risks fines, permit confiscation, or removal from the trail at checkpoints, so ensure your booking is confirmed through a registered agency before departure.
What Makes the Gokyo Lake Trek Different from Everest Base Camp?
Both routes start in Lukla and pass through Namche Bazaar, but diverge at Phortse Thanga where the Gokyo trail branches west while the EBC trail continues north. The Gokyo Lake Trek reaches its high point on Gokyo Ri (5,360m) with four eight-thousanders visible simultaneously: Everest (8,848.86m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,485m), and Cho Oyu (8,188m). The EBC trail peaks at Kala Patthar (5,545m) with the closest direct view of Everest's southwest face without a climbing permit. Gokyo Ri gives you breadth across the Himalayan range. Kala Patthar gives you Everest up close.
The six Gokyo Lakes are the route's defining feature with no equivalent on the EBC trail. Designated as a Ramsar wetland site, they form the world's highest freshwater lake system. The Ngozumpa Glacier, the longest in Nepal, runs the entire western length of the valley and only reveals its full scale from Gokyo Ri's summit. Stronger trekkers can extend to the fourth and fifth lakes above Gokyo village for additional altitude time, an option the standard EBC itinerary does not offer.
The Gokyo corridor carries significantly fewer trekkers than the EBC trail from Phortse Thanga northward. In 2026, trekker numbers remain well below EBC levels, which directly affects tea house availability, trail pace, and mountain views. Wildlife sightings, including snow leopard, musk deer, and Himalayan tahr, are more realistic on this quieter western corridor. Khumjung village and the Hillary School, built in 1961 and still operating, sit on the Gokyo descent route and are missed entirely by trekkers who stay on the main EBC trail.
The honest trade-off: the EBC trail includes Tengboche Monastery, the Khumbu Icefall view from Base Camp, and Kala Patthar's close Everest sightline. The Gokyo trail gives you six glacial lakes, a Ramsar-protected wetland, a quieter corridor, and a summit panorama covering more of the Himalayan range. If you want both, the Everest Three Passes Trek connects them in a single loop via Cho La Pass without retracing a day of trail.
Gokyo Lake Trek Itinerary
Arrival in Kathmandu
Your Madcap Adventure representative meets you at Tribhuvan International Airport and transfers you to your hotel by private vehicle. The evening includes a full route briefing, gear check, and permit arrangements. Walk through Thamel, try your first dal bhat, and get an early night. Sort your essential documents and gear before bed, as Day 2 has an early start regardless of which airport your Lukla flight departs from.
Fly to Lukla from Kathmandu or Manthali/Ramechhap, Trek to Phakding
Manthali to Lukla flight (March, April, May, September, October, November). During peak season, Lukla flights operate from Manthali/Ramechhap Airport due to air traffic at Kathmandu's domestic terminal. Manthali is approximately five to six hours by road from Kathmandu. Wake-up on this day is between 1:00 am and 3:00 am. Madcap Adventure arranges an escorted shuttle in a shared tourist vehicle. The flight to Lukla takes around 20 minutes. Pack and sort your bags the night before, as there is no time for it in the dark.
Kathmandu to Lukla flight (January, February, June, July, August, December): During non-peak months, Lukla flights operate directly from Kathmandu's domestic terminal. Wake-up is between 5:00 am and 6:00 am. Our staff escorts you to the terminal for a 35-minute flight to Lukla. The airline's routing decision is influenced by passenger volume in any given month and can vary.
Helicopter option: A direct helicopter from Kathmandu to Lukla is available at USD 650 per person on a five-person sharing basis. This is the most reliable way to avoid the Manthali road transfer during peak season.
Once in Lukla (2,840m), have breakfast while your guide arranges porter logistics. The first walk drops through pine forest and suspension bridges along the Dudh Koshi River to Phakding at 2,610m. A short, easy afternoon to settle into the rhythm of the trail.
Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar
The trail follows the Dudh Koshi River north through rhododendron and pine forest, crossing a series of suspension bridges before finishing with a sharp 600m climb into Namche Bazaar. The Hillary Suspension Bridge at around 2,860m is where most trekkers get their first clear view of Thamserku (6,608m) ahead and Ama Dablam (6,812m) to the east.
Namche is a horseshoe-shaped market town built into the hillside at 3,440m with bakeries, gear shops, restaurants, and ATMs. This is the last reliable ATM on the entire route. Withdraw enough Nepali rupees here to cover the remainder of the trek: budget for hot showers (NPR 150 to 300 per shower), device charging (NPR 100 to 200 per charge), boiled water, snacks, and guide and porter tips. Smaller denominations work better above 3,000m. The Sagarmatha National Park entry checkpoint is on the climb to Namche. Permits are checked here.
Mountain views: Thamserku, Ama Dablam, first glimpse of Everest from the upper checkpoint on a clear day.
Acclimatisation Day at Namche Bazaar, Hike to Everest View Hotel
You are sleeping at 3,440m. The acclimatisation day at Namche is not optional. Pushing higher without it is the most common reason trekkers do not finish this route. Your body needs one full day to begin adapting before the trail climbs seriously above Namche.
The recommended hike follows the ridge above town to approximately 3,880m near the Everest View Hotel. On a clear morning, this is your first direct sightline to Everest (8,848.86m), flanked by Nuptse, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. Have tea on the hotel terrace, then descend back to Namche to sleep lower than your highest point of the day. That principle is doing real acclimatisation work. Namche has a local market on Saturday mornings with Tibetan traders and fresh produce. If your rest day falls on a Saturday, walk through before the hike.
Mountain views: Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku.
Trek from Namche Bazaar to Phortse Thanga
Here, the route separates from the main Everest Base Camp trail. From Namche, the path crosses the Dudh Koshi River and climbs through rhododendron and pine forest to Phortse Thanga at the base of the Gokyo valley. The trail runs along a high ridge before dropping to the river crossing.
From Phortse Thanga onward, the trail is significantly quieter than the EBC corridor. The western branch to Gokyo draws a fraction of the trekkers heading toward Base Camp, and you feel the difference within the first hour out of Namche.
Mountain views: Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Kangtega.
Trek from Phortse Thanga to Machhermo
A steady climb as the altitude becomes serious. The trail follows the Dudh Koshi upstream past Dole (4,200m) through yak pastures and open moorland. Vegetation thins noticeably above 4,000m, and the views north toward Cho Oyu begin to open from the ridge above Dole.
Machhermo sits at 4,470m and is one of the highest permanently occupied settlements on this route. Tea houses run on solar power, and the menu simplifies here. If you arrive with a headache, tell your guide immediately. Do not wait to see if it passes.
Mountain views: Cho Oyu, Kangtega, Thamserku.
Trek from Machhermo to Gokyo
The Gokyo Valley widens as you approach, and the first two lakes appear before you reach the third. Dudh Pokhari, the third lake, sits at 4,790m on the eastern shore of which Gokyo village is built. The colour of the water at this altitude, deep turquoise against glacial grey moraine, is something most trekkers are not prepared for until they see it.
Gokyo village is a small cluster of lodges on the lakeshore. The Ngozumpa Glacier forms the entire western valley wall. Cho Oyu (8,188m) fills the skyline to the north. Arrive by early afternoon, drink water, eat well, and rest fully. Tomorrow is the summit day.
Mountain views: Cho Oyu, Gyachung Kang, Everest from the ridge above the lake.
Summit Gokyo Ri and Return to Gokyo
Start for Gokyo Ri no later than 6:00 am. The ascent gains approximately 570m from Gokyo village at 4,790m to Gokyo Ri at 5,360m, where every step takes noticeably more effort. Most trekkers take 2.5 to 3.5 hours to the top.
From the summit: Everest (8,848.86m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,485m), Cho Oyu (8,188m), and the full length of the Ngozumpa Glacier below you. Cloud builds from the south by late morning on most days. Summit by 9:00 am if conditions allow. The descent is steep, and the knees feel it. Use your poles, take your time, and be back at Gokyo by early afternoon.
Mountain views: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Ngozumpa Glacier, Gyachung Kang.
Trek from Gokyo to Dole
The descent begins. From Gokyo, the trail follows the western valley south through the upper lake zones before branching toward Dole at 4,200m. Legs feel the previous day's summit push on the downhill sections. Dole is a yak-herding settlement with basic but solid lodges. The altitude drop to 4,200m is the main recovery work today.
Mountain views: Cho Oyu, Kangtega, Thamserku opening up as the valley widens on descent.
Trek from Dole to Namche Bazaar via Khumjung Village
The descent via Khumjung adds a worthwhile detour through one of Khumbu's oldest Sherpa villages. Khumjung sits at around 3,790m with stone houses, terraced potato fields, a monastery said to house a Yeti scalp, and the Hillary School built in 1961 and still operating today. Most groups stop here for 30 to 40 minutes before continuing down to Namche. Arriving back in Namche at 3,440m after three nights above 4,500m feels almost warm. Good food, a proper hot shower, and the full Namche menu.
Mountain views: Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Everest from the Khumjung ridge.
Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla
A long, mostly downhill day retracing the lower Dudh Koshi valley back to Lukla. The trail from Namche through Phakding to Lukla moves faster on descent than it did on the way up. Lukla has tea houses with private bathrooms, restaurants with varied menus, and a functional airstrip. Arrive with enough time to sort gear, confirm return flight logistics with your guide, and get to bed at a reasonable hour.
Fly Back to Kathmandu or Manthali/Ramechhap from Lukla
Lukla to Manthali flight (March, April, May, September, October, November): The flight from Lukla to Manthali takes around 20 minutes, followed by approximately five to six hours by shared tourist vehicle to Kathmandu. Highway traffic can extend this. You will be transferred to your hotel on arrival in Kathmandu.
Lukla to Kathmandu flight (January, February, June, July, August, December): The direct flight from Lukla to Kathmandu takes around 35 minutes. Private transfer from the airport to your hotel on arrival.
Helicopter option: Direct Lukla to Kathmandu at USD 990 per person on a five-person sharing basis. The most reliable way to avoid the Manthali road transfer during peak season on the return leg.
Lukla flights are weather-dependent. Fog, wind, and low clouds can delay or cancel departures with little notice. Build at least one buffer day into your international onward travel if your connecting flight has no flexibility.
Final Departure from Kathmandu
Our team transfers you to Tribhuvan International Airport in a private vehicle for your onward journey. If you have time before your flight, Kathmandu's coffee shops and bakeries make for a good final hour in Nepal.
Itinerary Flexibility
This itinerary can be adjusted before departure: extend to the fourth and fifth Gokyo Lakes, or connect to Everest Base Camp or the Three Passes on a longer package. Tell Madcap Adventure your dates, fitness level, and preferences when you book.
Guide Decisions on Trail
The Gokyo Ri summit push can be affected by wind or cloud, and the Ngozumpa Glacier crossing needs careful route-finding. Above 4,000m, altitude sickness is monitored daily with a pulse oximeter. In these situations, your licensed guide can delay the summit attempt, add a rest day, or adjust the plan if needed. This is standard trail judgment, not a formality.

Essential Information
How Difficult Is the Gokyo Lake Trek?
The Gokyo Lake Trek is moderate to strenuous due to its altitude, the sustained multi-day effort required, and the Gokyo Ri summit day. You walk 3 to 7 hours a day on mixed terrain: stone trail, suspension bridges, yak pastures, and open rocky ground above 4,000m, for 10 consecutive trekking days.
Daily walking hours: 3 to 4 hours (Day 2, Lukla to Phakding) to 6 to 7 hours (Day 9, Gokyo to Dole, and Day 11, Namche to Lukla). Day 8, the Gokyo Ri summit push, runs 5 to 6 hours round trip but is the most physically demanding single day.
Maximum altitude: 5,360m at Gokyo Ri. The altitude gain from Namche (3,440m) to Gokyo (4,790m) over four days is manageable with the acclimatisation day built in, but Gokyo Ri adds another 570m of steep ground on top of five days already at altitude.
Tourist infrastructure: Good to Namche. Adequate through Machhermo. Basic at Gokyo. Above 4,000m, hot showers become limited, and Wi-Fi is unreliable.
Prior high-altitude trekking experience above 3,500m is strongly recommended. If you haven't trekked at altitude before, complete the Langtang Valley Trek or Annapurna Base Camp first.
When Is the Best Time to Do the Gokyo Lake Trek in Nepal?
September to November are the most reliable months for the Gokyo Lake Trek, with stable skies, clear summit views from Gokyo Ri, and the lakes at their most vivid. March through May are a strong second choice with rhododendrons in bloom on the lower Dudh Koshi trail and manageable conditions on the summit, though late May brings afternoon cloud build-up from pre-monsoon weather. Avoid June through August: heavy rain, low cloud, and leeches on the lower sections make the trek difficult, and mountain views from Gokyo Ri are largely blocked. December through February is possible for experienced cold-weather trekkers, but nights above 4,000m are seriously cold, some high-altitude lodges close entirely in January, and Gokyo Ri can be icy underfoot.

Food, Accommodation and Transport on the 13-Day Gokyo Lake Trek
The Gokyo Lake Trek is a full tea house trek. No camping, no tents. Every night ends with a warm room, a hot meal, and a dining room that quickly becomes the best part of the day. Our package covers accommodation and all three meals, so your only job is to walk.
Accommodation: You stay in traditional family-run tea house lodges throughout the trek in simple private twin-share rooms. Tea houses in the Khumbu are generally better maintained than other Nepal trekking regions, reflecting the volume of trekkers who pass through and the competition between lodges. Your Kathmandu nights are at a comfortable hotel on a bed and breakfast plan. All trek nights run on a full AP plan: breakfast, lunch, and dinner included every day.
Food: Dal bhat is your most reliable option at every altitude: rice, lentil soup, vegetable curry, with unlimited refills at most tea houses. Below Namche, you'll find pasta, fried rice, noodle soup, momos, eggs, and Tibetan bread. Above 4,000 m, the menu shrinks, and prices rise. Stock up on personal snacks in Kathmandu before you fly. Energy bars, nuts, dried fruit, and chocolate are available on the trail but cost two to three times more above Namche.
Drinking water: Boiled water is available at every lodge at low cost. Carry a reusable bottle and pack purification tablets as a backup. Single-use plastic is a documented waste problem in the Khumbu. The Sagarmatha National Park regulations actively aim to reduce it.
Transport: Both airport transfers in Kathmandu are by private vehicle. Domestic flights to and from Lukla are included in the package. The Manthali road transfer during peak season is arranged and escorted by Madcap Adventure.
Why is Travel Insurance for the Gokyo Lake Trek Essential?
Travel insurance is not optional on the Gokyo Lake Trek. The route reaches 5,360m in a remote national park with no road access, and a single helicopter evacuation without coverage costs USD 3,000 to 6,000 out of pocket. Your policy must explicitly cover helicopter rescue from altitudes up to at least 6,000m, emergency medical treatment, trip cancellation, and gear loss, and must include a 24/7 emergency assistance line that can coordinate directly with helicopter operators in Nepal. Read the altitude ceiling on your evacuation cover before you buy, not after.
Safety and Altitude Notes on the Gokyo Lake Trek
The Gokyo Lake Trek reaches 5,360m at Gokyo Ri and AMS is a real risk above 4,000m. The acclimatisation day at Namche Bazaar is not optional. The hike to 3,880m above town is doing real physiological work before the trail pushes higher. Do not skip it and do not treat early symptoms as something to push through. Tell your guide immediately if you develop a persistent headache, nausea, dizziness, loss of appetite, or difficulty breathing at rest. Your guide is trained in AMS recognition and will make the call on descent if needed. Helicopter evacuation from the Khumbu costs USD 3,000 to 6,000 without insurance coverage, which is why a policy explicitly covering high-altitude evacuation up to at least 6,000m is a hard requirement before permits are processed.
How to prepare for trekking in Gokyo Lake?
Fitness level: Walk 5 to 7 hours a day for 10 consecutive trekking days on mixed terrain. Prior high-altitude experience above 3,500m is a safety consideration, not just a recommendation. If you haven't done this, complete the Langtang Valley Trek or Annapurna Base Camp first.
Gear essentials: Broken-in waterproof boots are non-negotiable on the rocky Khumbu trail. Layer your clothing. Mornings in Gokyo village are cold and afternoons on the descent can be warm. Bring a 20 to 25 litre daypack, trekking poles (critical on the Gokyo Ri descent), a good headlamp, UV-blocking sunglasses, and a 20,000 mAh power bank. A sleeping bag liner is recommended above 4,000m.
Cash reality: The last reliable ATM is in Namche Bazaar on Day 3. There are no cash machines above that point. Withdraw enough Nepali rupees in Namche to cover the full remainder of the trek: budget for hot showers, device charging, boiled water, extra snacks, and guide and porter tips. Smaller denominations work better above 3,000m.
SIM and network: Ncell has better Khumbu coverage than NTC on this route. Signal is reasonable to Namche and patchy above Phortse Thanga. Unreliable from Machhermo upward. Download offline maps before you leave Kathmandu. Maps.me and Gaia GPS both cover the Gokyo Valley route.
Wi-Fi: Available at Namche and a few lodges below 4,000m. Treat it as unavailable above Namche.
Device charging: Tea houses charge NPR 100 to 200 per device per session. Your power bank is your primary option above 4,000m. A 20,000 mAh unit gives 3 to 4 full phone charges without reliable power access.
