The Annapurna Base Camp trek is one of the most popular Himalayan treks in Nepal and for good reason. You reach a 4,130m base camp, walk through real Gurung villages, sleep in tea houses, and get surrounded by some of the tallest peaks on Earth. No technical skills needed. No prior trekking experience required. Just a decent fitness level and 10 days. The 10-day package covers everything: a licensed guide, permits, accommodation, and all meals on the trail. You fly into Pokhara, trek for seven days through rhododendron forests and glacier valleys, then return via the natural hot springs at Jhinu Danda.
Annapurna Base Camp Trek
Trip Overview
This Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek is not just another well-trodden trail in Nepal. It's a journey that takes you inside the Annapurna massif itself, a natural glacial amphitheatre ringed by giant peaks on all sides. Reaching an altitude of 4,130 meters, the ABC trek suits both first-time trekkers and seasoned veterans, unlike some high-altitude expeditions that require high endurance and technical climbing skills.
This classic Nepali trek is well marked with the facilities of cozy mountain lodges, making it perfect for any age group from children (minimum age 12) to adults with a decent level of fitness. Starting your journey from the hustling, bustling streets of Kathmandu to the peaceful trails of Pokhara, and gradually to the Himalayan basin of Annapurna (8,091m), the Annapurna Base Camp trek is an experience that stays with you long after the journey ends.
The trail leads you through traditional Gurung and Magar villages of Nepal, passing terraced fields, bamboo groves, rhododendron forests, and ends at the foot of Annapurna I, a mountain so formidable that it was the first 8,000-meter peak ever summited by Maurice Herzog in 1950. This trek takes you deep into the Annapurna Conservation Area, Nepal’s first and largest conservation zone, covering 7,629 square kilometers of forests, valleys, and high-altitude wilderness.
Unlike some trekking destinations where you admire giant mountains from a distance, the Annapurna Base Camp trek puts you inside them. When you step inside Annapurna Base Camp, you will be surrounded by Annapurna South, Annapurna III, Gangapurna, Hiunchuli, and the unmistakable sharp pyramid of Machhapuchhre from all sides- often described as the finest scenery on the planet by trekkers.
This 10-day Annapurna Base Camp trek itinerary is thoughtfully designed to guide for every stage of your adventure, ensuring a memorable and rewarding experience. The pacing is deliberate, providing enough time for the trekkers to experience traditional village life, mesmerizing scenery, and diverse wildlife.

What makes the Annapurna Base Camp Trek different from other trekking destinations?
While most treks give you views of the mountains from a distance, the Annapurna Base Camp trek takes you inside the massif itself. When you reach the base camp of Annapurna Base Camp, you won’t be just looking at the giant peaks of the world from afar- you will be surrounded by them. And that’s rare even by Himalayan standards.
- Two base camps in one trek: Most routes have one destination. This one takes you through Machhapuchhre Base Camp (3,720m) on the way to Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m). Two completely different landscapes, one itinerary
- You walk inside the mountains, not toward them: The Annapurna Sanctuary wraps around you at base camp. Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre, Gangapurna, and Hiunchuli rise on every side, a 360° mountain amphitheatre that very few treks in the world can match
- You reach an 8,000m peak's base camp without technical skills: Annapurna I is the world's 10th highest mountain and the first 8,000m peak ever summited. Getting to its base camp requires fitness and determination, not ropes or crampons
- Cultural depth: The route passes through Gurung and Magar villages that have existed in these hills for centuries, with their own architecture, food, and culture. They're not built around tourism; tourism is built around them
- A hot spring on the way back: Jhinu Danda's natural hot springs sit above the Modi Khola river. It's a small detail that makes a real difference after four days of climbing and descending
- Accessible altitude: At 4,130m, ABC is significantly lower than Everest Base Camp (5,364m) or Thorong La Pass (5,416m), making it the most achievable high-altitude base camp experience in Nepal for first-timers
- Annapurna Conservation Area: At 7,629 sq km, this is Nepal's first and largest conservation zone, and four decades of active protection shows. The rhododendron forests are thick, the Modi Khola runs clear, and if you're quiet on the trail, red pandas and Himalayan tahr are spotted here, not just listed on a sign.

Who can do this 10-day Annapurna Base Camp trek, and how to prepare?
This 10-day Annapurna Base Camp trek is rated as moderate, which can be done by both beginners and experienced hikers, as it does not require technical climbing skills or an extreme fitness level, unlike some high-altitude expeditions. Annapurna Base Camp trek has a well-marked trail, with the comfort of cozy mountain lodges and tea houses making it suitable for any age group, from children (minimum age of 12 years old) to adults, with proper preparation and acclimatization.
However, if you love an adrenaline-filled Himalayan adventure, then we do organize challenging Himalayan treks and helicopter experiences like the Everest Base Camp trek and Manaslu Circuit trek in Nepal.
Even if this 10-day Annapurna Base Camp trek is far easier than the Everest Base Camp trek, it's still no stroll in a garden, as you have to hike for anywhere near 5-8 hours on uneven trails. You can prepare for this trek by focusing on building cardiovascular fitness, like hiking, running, cycling, and most importantly, strength training at least 6-8 weeks in advance.
Also, pack your essentials like proper trekking gear, layered clothing, trekking boots, waterproof jackets, hats, and quality sun protection to avoid sunburns during the journey, as UV exposure at higher altitudes is much stronger. Also, carrying lightweight snacks and energy drinks such as energy bars, chocolates, biscuits, electrolyte powders, ORS (oral rehydration salts), and so on can provide quick fuel during long trekking hours.
Annapurna Base Camp Trek Cost Breakdown 2026- Flights, Accommodation, Guide & More
The Annapurna Base Camp trek package price is not the same for everyone, and that's intentional-what you pay depends mostly on what you choose. This 10-day Annapurna Base Camp trek in Nepal includes all the basic amenities, from a professional guide to accommodation, lodging, and so on. But here’s what moves the prices:
- Group vs. private: Joining a scheduled group departure is the most cost-effective way to book. A private package (just your group and a dedicated guide) costs more per person since fixed costs like the guide’s fee and transport don't get shared. For solo trekkers, a group departure often works out well both financially and socially.
- Porter add-on: A porter carries your main bag (up to 20kg), leaving you with just a light daypack for the trail. Most people who add a porter on day one are grateful for it by day four. It costs extra, but it changes the experience significantly.
- Meals included vs. not: Our standard package includes all meals on the trek. If you're comparing packages elsewhere, check carefully; some list lower base prices but don't include meals, which adds up fast over seven trekking days.
- Room type: Standard tea house rooms are twin-share with basic blankets. On the lower section of the route (Ghandruk, Chhomrong), some tea houses offer slightly better rooms with attached bathrooms. These cost more, and availability peaks during trekking season.
- Season: Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are peak seasons. Flights from Kathmandu to Pokhara and popular tea houses can fill up; book early. Off-season packages sometimes come with lower rates but require more flexibility around trail and weather conditions.
- Booking timing: Booking your Annapurna Base Camp trek early, especially for 2026 or 2027 departures, locks in your preferred dates and in many cases qualifies you for our early bird rates. More on that is included below.

Drive from Pokhara back to Kathmandu
Board the morning tourist bus from Pokhara to Kathmandu, enjoying the scenic views of rural Nepal and reminiscing about your trekking adventures. Private vehicles or domestic flights are available with additional charges if you prefer comfort over the bus journey.
After arriving in Kathmandu in the afternoon, our team will drop you at your hotel, and then you can enjoy your day exploring the city life of Thamel. In the evening, join our team for your farewell dinner to celebrate and reminisce about the tales of the Annapurna Base Camp trek.
Departure from Kathmandu
After breakfast, our team will drop you off at the Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward journey, filled with memories of Nepal’s stunning Annapurna region.
Itinerary Flexibility
The itinerary can be adjusted before departure: add a rest day, extend with a Poon Hill sunrise side trip, or swap a teahouse night for extra time at Base Camp (4,130m). Tell Madcap Adventure your dates, fitness level, and preferences when you book.
Guide Decisions on Trail
Snowfall, landslides, or river crossings can close sections of trail with little warning. Above 3,000m, altitude sickness is something your guide watches for daily. In these situations, your licensed guide can change the day's plan, add a rest day, or turn the group back if needed. This is standard trail judgment, not a formality.

Essential Information
How difficult is the Annapurna Base Camp trek?
The Annapurna Base Camp trek, located at a height of 4,130m, is rated as moderate, unlike Everest Base Camp (5,364m), Manaslu Circuit (5,106m), or the Thorong La Pass on the Annapurna Circuit (5,416m), and can be done by both beginner and advanced climbers. Even though the trek doesn’t require technical climbing skills or specialized mountaineering equipment, it still demands consistent physical effort. Here’s what to expect during the Annapurna Base Camp Trek:
- Trek distance: The round trip covers approximately 70-80 kilometers, depending on the exact route taken.
- Daily walking hours: Expect 5 to 7 hours of trekking per day.
- Maximum elevation: Annapurna Base Camp sits at 4,130 meters (13,550 ft).
- Tourism infrastructure: Tea houses line the entire route—no camping required. The trail is well marked and well serviced, with proper accommodation, hot showers, and Wi-Fi throughout.
When is the best time to do Annapurna Base Camp Trek?
The best time to trek to Annapurna Base Camp is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons, when the weather is clear and temperatures are comfortable.
Trekking during spring is magical with the blooming rhododendrons, bees humming, clear skies, and trails lined with red and white flowers. Temperatures range from 5°C to 20°C at lower elevations, and colder at base camp, making it perfect weather for seasonal trekkers.
Likewise, stable weather in Autumn, with temperatures ranging from -2°C to 22°C, clear skies, and mountain views, attracts trekkers from all over the world. As it's the festive season in Nepal, with Dashain and Tihar falling at this time, it's a culturally vibrant time to travel.
While you can trek in off-seasons (winter from December to February and monsoon from June to August), it demands more preparation. Unlike other trekking destinations which face similar winter challenges, the ABC trail at lower elevations remains accessible even in winter, quieter and cheaper, though snow is possible above 3,000 meters.
What trekking permits are required for Annapurna Base Camp?
Based on the latest information for the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek in 2026, you will need the following two permits, both of which will be arranged by Madcap Adventure:
| Permits | Foreign nationals | SAARC nationals |
| Annapurna Conservation Area Permits | USD 30 per person | USD 8 per person |
| TIMS Card | USD 17 per person | USD 8 per person |
ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit): This is mandatory for entry into the Annapurna Conservation Area, which will be checked at multiple checkpoints along the route, so keep it safe.
Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) Card: This is recommended for safety tracking purposes.
Important 2026 update: As per Nepal’s 2023 trekking regulations, a licensed guide is mandatory for all foreign trekkers on the Annapurna Base Camp route. Permits must be arranged before you enter the trail in Kathmandu or Pokhara, as there are no permit offices on the trail itself. Obtain permits at least a day before your trek begins and carry physical copies at all times, as mobile connectivity is limited at higher elevations
Altitude Sickness
The highest point of the trek is Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 meters, significantly lower than Everest Base Camp or the Thorong La Pass on the Annapurna Circuit, but the risk of altitude sickness (Acute Mountain Sickness or AMS) still exists, which can be managed with gradual ascent and proper precautions.
The golden rule is simple: ascend slowly, stay well hydrated, eat enough, avoid alcohol, rest when needed, and listen to your body. Never ignore symptoms and never push through them. Our 10-day itinerary is formed with a controlled ascent profile, allowing your body to gradually adjust to the environment.
Common AMS Symptoms: Headache, nausea, dizziness, breathlessness, fatigue, loss of appetite, insomnia, extreme weakness
Travel Insurance
As Annapurna Base Camp is in a secluded area away from any established town, you cannot get out of the region in emergency circumstances immediately by walking. So, we strongly recommend travel insurance with helicopter evacuation coverage as it’s mandatory for the Annapurna Base Camp trek.
While the trail is well-serviced, altitude sickness or injuries can still occur, and helicopter rescue is the only fast way out from higher elevations. Also, we strongly advise you to combine helicopter evacuation with medical coverage and loss of personal belongings for complete peace of mind.
Accommodation and Food on the Annapurna Base Camp trek
You will get the tea houses lined up along the entire Annapurna Base Camp trek route, so no camping is required. These are small family-run guesthouses offering basic shared rooms and simple, delicious meals. Our Annapurna Base Camp trek package includes accommodation and three meals per day throughout the trek.
- Trail food is hearty and filling. Dal bhat (lentil soup with rice and vegetables) is the trekker’s staple, and it comes with unlimited refills at most tea houses. You will also find thukpa (noodle soup), momos (dumplings), porridge, eggs, pasta, fried rice, and freshly baked goods. As elevation increases, food prices rise, so budget an extra USD 10 to 15 per day for drinks, snacks, and any additional services like hot showers or WiFi.
- Drinking water: Boiled water is available throughout the trail at low cost. Bring a reusable water bottle and water purification tablets as a backup. Avoid single-use plastic bottles to help protect the Annapurna Conservation Area.
- Snacks: Stock up on energy bars, nuts, dried fruit, and chocolate in Kathmandu or Pokhara, as it gets significantly more expensive once you are on the trail.
