Adventure comes with risk, and travel insurance is how you cover it. Nepal's most popular activities carry real exposure:
- Trekking in the Himalaya, often far from proper roads or medical facilities
- Rafting
- Mountain biking
- Canyoning
- Mountaineering and peak climbing
- Bungee jumping
- Paragliding
Each of these offers a serious adventure, and each carries risk that's easy to underestimate until something goes wrong. Even with careful planning and an experienced crew, you can still run into:
- Bad weather that strands a group for days
- Avalanches or landslides
- Altitude sickness
- Occasional theft, and in rare cases, assault, even though Nepal is a generally safe country to travel in
Trekking staff are trained to handle common problems on the trail. Serious situations, though, need outside support that only proper insurance can provide. That's why we ask every guest to carry travel insurance suited to their specific trip.
What Your Policy Needs to Cover
- Medical treatment, including hospitalization. Care in remote areas or at high altitude can be expensive
- Emergency evacuation, ideally including helicopter rescue. In a serious accident or acute altitude sickness, a helicopter is often the only way out of the mountains, and that cost adds up fast
- Trip cancellation or interruption, in case illness, injury, or a natural event forces you to cancel or cut the trip short
- Personal belongings, including luggage, gear, and travel documents. Nepal itself only offers minor coverage for lost, stolen, or damaged tickets, visas, and passports, so this needs to come from your own policy
- Adventure activity coverage, specifically. Some standard policies exclude trekking above a certain altitude or exclude activities like peak climbing and paragliding entirely, so check the fine print
- Duration, covering the full trip plus a few buffer days before and after, in case of delays
Coverage needs also depend on what you're doing:
- Trekking and peak climbing: insurance should be non-negotiable here, and should specifically include high-altitude illness, medical treatment, and helicopter evacuation
- Lower-risk activities like sightseeing, easy day hikes, and wildlife safaris carry far less risk, and a lighter policy is usually enough
We recommend consulting a travel insurance provider in your home country rather than relying on anything arranged locally in Nepal, since the coverage available here is limited to minor items rather than medical or evacuation costs.
